Of course after clicking various links on CNET I found one that interested me.

Fall tradition at the Plumper Pumpkin Patch in Portland, Oregan seems to fall in line with most large pumpkin patches around the U.S. It offers the old stand by of having a corn field maze, some pony rides, and a hay ride. Good old fashion fun. They do however have something a bit more festive for those who see the fall as a time where you go around destroying your neighbors jackolanterns. Each year a few of the local engineers will create super weapons to hurl and launch pumpkins at stationary targets (a larger wooden pumpkin and a broken down chevy). They range from steam cannons, to medieval catapults, to plain slingshots. Fun for all, pumpkin smashing seems to be where its at.
i think it'd be fun to fire one of these things. Me and Marshall fire potato cannons every 4th of July and its awesome. I'd imagine blasting a pumpkin into a field trying to hit a beat up chevy would be really fun. I'm sure it beats firing a potato off a cliff, but thats still pretty good too.
